Young Racer's Club August 2011 - Taylor Blevins

Young Racer's Club August 2011 - Taylor Blevins
Young Racer's Club August 2011 - Taylor Blevins from Canyon, Texas - Circle Track Magazine
This month's lucky YRC contest winner is Taylor Blevins from Canyon, Texas

Taylor Blevins Canyon, TX
Sixteen-year-old Taylor Blevins is this month's Young Racers' Club winner. The high schooler hails from Canyon, Texas, which is just south of Amarillo. Taylor is a third generation racer who has helped maintain and prepare both Modified and Late Models for his father and grandfather. Together those two Blevins have more than 50 years of experience racing and building race cars. So, naturally, with all that experience, as Taylor got older the decision was made to build a car for him to try his hand behind the wheel. They chose the Cyclone Division at the 3⁄8-mile clay oval of Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo. The trio built a '76 Monte Carlo with the original intention of running the local dirt tracks. However, they didn't get the car completed for the dirt season. So they did the only logical thing and went to get a little seat time on the pavement at Altus Speedway in Altus, Oklahoma. After running Atlus three times, Taylor ended up with three Third Place finishes. So, does that early success mean that he's ditching the idea of going dirt racing? Not on your life.

2011 Aragon MotoGP Saturday Round Up: Going Over Old Ground, Motegi, Rossi, Marquez

There are a number of subjects that it feels like we've been talking about forever this season. The two biggest are obvious: Valentino Rossi's battle with the Ducati Desmosedici, and Motegi, so it becomes tedious to have to talk about them again. But the reason we keep talking about them is simple. They are big. These are the stories that really matter. So we have to keep talking about them.

The subject of Motegi will not be relevant for long. In two weeks' time, the MotoGP circus will alight at the Japanese circuit, most of whom carrying large packages containing food, and for the more paranoid, even water. All of the MotoGP riders will be there, Valentino Rossi announcing at Thursday's press conference that he would be going to Motegi, and HRC issuing a press release announcing they would have eight (count 'em, eight) riders at Motegi, with Japanese veterans Shinichi Ito and Kousuke Akiyoshi entered as wildcards.

Stoner Stands Firm on Indy

Stoner nails the reasons why Indy is a poor track. From MCN:

The corners get tighter and tighter until you are almost stopped and then you have to get on the gas and exit. It doesn?t flow at all, each set of corners it muddles you up and then you go a little straight.

I, for one, am glad to have Casey as a break from the PR fluff around MotoGP. I am not pleased to see Indy back on the calendar for another three years.

Race Car Air Conditioning - Chilled Like No Other

Race Car Air Conditioning - Chilled Like No Other
Race Car Air Conditioning - Lightweight Air Cooling System for Racers - Circle Track Magazine
Resident Freelancer Todd Ridgeway got up close with a new kind of A/C system for your race car. It uses freon and would make a penguin jealous

Staying cool in the race car always has been, and always will be, a very big deal to any driver or race team in the business. The driver's core body temperature has a direct effect on his or her on-track production. That production comes in the form of race results along with a driver's decisions, good or bad. But it almost always hinges on the performance of the guy or gal behind the wheel and their comfort zone. More often than not, staying cool means staying mentally alert and in control ready for any situation. Even when the outside temperature is cool, it can still be a very hot seat in the race car. Drivers make split second decisions in the blink of an eye and any effort made to help make the right decision is an added plus for the race team.

2011 Aragon 125cc FP3 Result: Zarco Leads, While Terol Suffers Mechanical Problems

Johann Zarco topped the timesheets in the final session of free practice for the 125cc class at Motorland Aragon, the Frenchman setting the fastest time in the final minutes of the session, dropping Maverick Viñales back to 2nd, after the Blusens rider had just sneaked ahead of him a few laps earlier. British rider Danny Kent put in yet another impressive performance, ending FP3 in 3rd, just under two tenths slower than Zarco. Nico Terol suffered mechanical problems, and dropped down to 12th, after managing to set just four laps during the session.

Racing Suspension Setup - Detailed Guide to the Setup of Race Cars - Car Craft Magazine
Bob Bolles penned this guide to help readers rededicate themselves to understanding the setup of race cars

At this time of year I like to do a setup guide and that idea, combined with a number of requests and communications I have had with racers recently, formed this series. Much, if not all of the following, has been covered before, but, maybe not in the way that could be fully understood by everyone. This is my best effort to date to help everyone understand the parts of setup and the combining of these parts into a winning car.

Power Failure At Aragon Sees Practice Canceled, New Schedule For Saturday

For the second time this season, the MotoGP series has lost an afternoon to extraordinary circumstances. At Assen, it was a blown engine during Moto2 practice combined with pouring rain to force the cancellation of FP2 sessions for all three classes, while at the Motorland Aragon circuit today, a defective transformer saw all power lost at the circuit, forcing the cancellation of FP2 for the MotoGP and Moto2 classes. The lack of power meant that all of the facilities at the circuit shut down, meaning a lack of power for timing, in the pit garages, and more importantly, in the circuit control tower. Without the ability to monitor the track via CCTV and reliably communicate with all parts of the track, having racing motorcycles circulating posed too much of a danger to the safety of the riders. As a result, the decision was taken to cancel practice for the rest of the afternoon, despite power returning intermittently as the UPS and backup transformer took over.

2011 Aragon MotoGP Friday Round Up: Events, The One Thing You Can't Plan For

Friday was a weird one. Normally, I'd be talking about who was fast (Pedrosa), who was not (Rossi), and the implications of the new chassis being used in MotoGP and Moto2, but instead, Friday at Motorland Aragon was all about transformers, UPSes, backup systems and the complex electronics that control them.

Power started going at around lunchtime, the lights and power in the media center cycling on and off continuously for a couple of minutes, before cutting out entirely. It immediately became clear that it was not just the media center, however, as teams came streaming out of garages both into pit lane and out of the rear for a communal gathering to try to figure out what had happened. Power came back after lunch for a short period, allowing the 125cc class to run their FP2 session, before going out again directly after that. There then followed a period of about an hour in which journalists wandered round looking quizzically at each other, while harried members of the Motorland Aragon staff rushed around trying to figure out what was going on.

FIM Women's Vice World Title to be decided

Although Spaniard Laia Sanz ? Repsol Montesa has already been crowned the 2011 FIM Women's Trial World Champion, this Friday will see the final two positions of the championship podium decided. Celebrating the final round of the three round series, thirty-eight riders from eleven different countries will look to settle their individual battles as the competition comes to a head in Tolmezzo, Italy on Friday.

After claiming back-to-back victories at the first two chapters of the competition, twenty-five year old Sanz has lifted her eleventh FIM Women's title. Whilst she may feel a weight has been lifted from her shoulders, history would suggest that Laia's drive and determination will not be satisfied with anything other than another commanding win this time out.

As has been the case since the opening event in Germany, British riders Emma Bristow ? Ossa and Rebekah Cook ? Sherco look set to continue their close rivalry into the final stage of the series. Having finished as Vice World champion to Laia during the last three years, Cook is perhaps favourite to do the same again this time around. However, it has been twenty-year old Bristow who has somewhat set the pace behind Sanz.

The youngster from Boston produced two accomplished performances at the opening rounds of the series and currently finds herself second in the general standings. Training hard over the winter months and moving to Spanish manufacturer Ossa at the start of the current season, Bristow has shown a marked improvement in her riding and possibly will pose the greatest threat to Sanz in the future. After recently claiming a deserved runners-up position in the UEM Women's European Trial Championship, Bristow will now look to replicate her incredible achievement on the World stage.

Meanwhile Cook will arrive in Italy this weekend focused on improving on her previous results. After placing third at the previous two rounds of the series, the twenty-five year old seasoned campaigner currently finds herself third in the general standings. Presently just four points behind Bristow, Cook is aware that she must produce a strong performance this Friday if she is to move up the championship rankings. Sitting just outside of the top three Sandra Gomez ? Gas Gas finds herself in fourth position and only six points less than Cook.

Having finished fifth at the end of 2010, Gomez will look to show that her ability has progressed since last season. Although Sandra will be focused on the riders in front of her, she must also refrain from making any costly mistakes as German rider Rosita Leotta ? Gas Gas sits only one point behind her in fifth spot, so there is little room for error.

Further down the general standings competition is as close as ever with only four points separating the next three riders. Currently positioned sixth in the table, Donna Fox ? Beta will aim to record a strong result in Italy in order to advance inside the top five. Similarly seventh and eighth placed Sandrine Juffet ? Gas Gas and Ina Wilde ? Sherco respectively will look to end their season campaigns on a high. Ultimately Tolmezzo looks set to bring to a close another exciting chapter of this ever emerging female championship.

Melandri quickest in Misano testing

Marco Melandri set the quickest time for Yamaha on day 1 of Misano testing. The Italian lapped the World Circuit in a time of 1 minute 36.0 seconds, half a second quicker than June?s race record lap set by Carlos Checa (1?36.520). The Althea Ducati man however still holds the best unofficial time around Misano, with a 1?34.9 set in May?s testing. This time round Checa was three-tenths slower than Melandri and shares the slot with Eugene Laverty on the other Yamaha.

One-make tyre supplier Pirelli brought along the latest 2012-spec material, in particular for the Phillip Island opener, to the test as well as the tyres that will be used in the final three rounds of this year?s championship.

With testing taking place in perfect conditions (air 31 / track 44C), much interest surrounded the debut of Toni Elias (LCR Honda?s MotoGP rider) on the BMW Italia machine vacated by James Toseland, who retired this week. The Spaniard, for the first time ever on a Superbike, did have one harmless crash and finished the day with a best lap of 1?38.1.

Excellent form was also shown by Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) with a time of 1?36.5, the British rider galvanized by his recent win in the wet at the Nurburgring. Joan Lascorz and the recovering Chris Vermeulen were also testing for the Akashi manufacturer, the Australian set to return to race action at Imola after a difficult season.

With Max Biaggi still convalescent after fracturing a bone in his left foot in Germany, Aprilia?s testing duties were carried out by its test-team and German rider Alex Hofmann (1?37.0). The reigning world champion will attempt to return at Imola.

Unofficial Tuesday times: 1. Melandri (Yamaha) 1?36.0; 2. Checa (Ducati) 1?36.3; 3. Laverty (Yamaha) 1?36.3; 4. Sykes (Kawasaki) 1?36.5; 5. Badovini (BMW) 1?36.8; 6. Rea (Honda) 1?36.9; 7. Lascorz (Kawasaki) 1?36.9; 8. Hofmann (Aprilia) 1?37.0; 9. Martin (BMW) 1?37.9; 10. Xaus (Honda) 1?38.0; 11. Elias (BMW) 1?38.1; 12. Vermeulen (Kawasaki) 1?38.4; 13. Tamada (Honda) 1?39.8.

Supersport: 1. Salom (Kawasaki) 1?39.4; 2. Parkes (Kawasaki) 1?39.7; 3. Morais (Kawasaki) 1?40.6.

Yamaha Rider - Giacomo Agostini

Motorcycle RacingThe Italian was already a living legend when he joined the Yamaha Factory Team for the 1974 500cc and 350cc World Championships. The YZR500 OW20 had already proved its potential in the hands of Jarno Saarinen when the four cylinder two-stroke hit the Grand Prix stage in 1972 and the superstar from Brescia identified the changing scene in the premier class by embracing the new technology. ?Ago? was a thirteen-time world champion by 1974 (six in the 350cc and seven in 500cc classes) when he joined Yamaha seeking a fresh challenge. The combination began in fierce fashion with a victory in all five races on the 350cc 0W16 for title number fourteen. The following year, in 1975, Giacomo?s four wins and two additional podiums on the formidable 500cc 0W23 gave Yamaha their first championship in the premier-class; a watershed moment.

Giacomo forged a strong association with Yamaha and returned to the 0Ws and steered the 0W35 in his final season (his fourteenth) in 1977 where he gained two more podium results. After a brief attempt at car racing Agostini started a successful managerial career and helmed the factory squad at a time when Kenny Roberts and Eddie Lawson were at the heights of their powers.

Needless to say the records (15 titles, 122 wins, 68 500cc triumphs, 159 podiums in all classes) mean that Agostini will always hold an elevated position in the annals of motorcycle sport. His flamboyance and charm made him a household name in Italy and he is a figure that commands the upmost respect when he makes annual promotional appearances at the age of 68. Ago has also been an important part of the Yamaha Classic Racing Team and takes great delight in wheeling out his rasping ?smokers? for the older generation of fans to roll back the years and a younger audience to wonder at a bygone age.

Yamaha Confirm Lorenzo And Spies To Race At Motegi

Another major stronghold in the resistance to the Japanese round of MotoGP has crumbled: the Yamaha Factory Racing team has announced that the team and both of its riders will attend the Motegi MotoGP race on October 2nd of this year. The announcement means that both Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies will be present at Motegi, lining up alongside the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha team - the first team to officially announce they would be going - of Colin Edwards and Cal Crutchlow, as well as Hector Barbera and the Mapfre Aspar team.

Jorge Lorenzo was one of the first riders to state categorically that he would not go to Japan, leading a general revolt against the decision at Barcelona after a debate which had kicked off at Le Mans, and was soon joined by most of the MotoGP riders, with the backing of many team members and crew. Lorenzo found a powerful ally in Casey Stoner: with both championship contenders initially refusing to race, the grid felt they were capable of withstanding the pressure from Dorna and the race organizers to attend the race. Behind the scenes, Valentino Rossi lobbied hard to have the race either scrapped or moved to Suzuka, both using his acknowledged political power inside the paddock, and representing many people inside the paddock who came to him because of his unique position.
