Race Team Sponsorships - The Money Game

Race Team Sponsorships - The Money Game

A guide to finding sponsorships to support your racing team

What is the link between racers, fans, and businesses potentially involved with sponsorship in racing? That is the link that racers need to determine when looking to secure funds from any business. It may be an obvious user-defined link such as a racing vendor supporting a car or a home improvement center sponsoring a NASCAR team. The sponsor is looking to get its name in front of a specific set of customers and associate the company name with racing. It is an act of associating multiple passions with a need and a name.

Jim revisits BSFC

Whether you're an engine builder or engaged in testing them on an engine dynamometer, a clear and working understanding of brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) can be of value. The broader category includes parts designers and those interested in evaluating power level changes involving parts or modifications. In one way or another, any changes in power (positive or negative) can be linked to combustion efficiency. And, simply stated, BSFC is keyed to this as well. Despite previous discussions about the subject, we'll expand on it a bit in this presentation.

Jeff Huneycutt delves into how the proper installation of head gaskets can practically eliminate dreaded failures

In what the old timers called the "good old days," blown head gaskets used to be a real pain in the...well, you pick the body part. Poor machining practices that left the decks of both the heads and the block wavy, subpar bolts that weren't torqued accurately, and old-school head gaskets left a lot to be desired. And that's why all those additional practices popped up to help increase the chances of getting a long-lasting head gasket seal.

2011 Season Kicks Off

Qatar in March is an oddity. A race in the cooler evening air, floodlit. If that?s not different enough for you, throw in a covering of sand which makes any excursion from the thin, black racing line an adventure in optimism or blind faith depending on the rider.

So Qatar is not a good race to extrapolate a season from. I won?t let that stop me trying.

Honda are back on form. 2011 is the first time they have won the opening race of the season for 8 years. The race was not just won, however, it was dominated by Honda and in particular Stoner through every session. The dominanace was further emphasised by Lorenzo?s delight at an unexpected second place. The cause? A mysterious loss of grip in the Pedrosa clutch hand causing him to ride out the last couple of laps in one gear.

In truth, in the end it was a brave performance from the diminutive Spaniard, who cannot seem to catch a break. At least this year he starts without injury. His Spanish nemesis, Lorenzo, took great delight in snatching Dani?s second place, all the more for the unexpected nature of it. Stoner looked every inch the Qatar specialist he is; unbeatable on this track.

Other highlights from the race: Simoncelli on the Honda looks to be a force to be reckoned with and will probably challenge for the podium on more occasions than not. Dovizioso looks like he should be demoted next year ? this being his final chance to prove Honda did not make a mistake when guaranteeing him a works ride in his contract. The dream pairing of Ducati and Rossi has some way to go: on the one hand Rossi is still claiming injury to his shoulder, on the other his crew chief is making noises that the bike is still some way away from where they want it to be. This could be a very tough year for the GOAT.

So what can we expect this year? It looks like Honda riders will have something of an advantage with the next closest being Lorenzo working his genius hard to stay with them and challenge for the lead. Rossi?s season will be a re-building and formative one, before perhaps one last assault on the championship in 2012. And if you?re not on a Honda, Yamaha or Ducati works bike, you better hope for some divine intervention because it is going to be tough to get an inch on these guys.

At least, that?s what it looks like for now?

Track Tech Q&A - Comparing Racing To Fighting - Circle Track Magazine
Bob compares racing to fighting

Race car drivers compete head to head and the race could be compared to an organized fight, as opposed to a street fight. Note that I'm not encouraging fighting on the track or in the pits. On the contrary, I'm going to explain how this comparison could be good for the mentality of the drivers and the future of the sport.

All set for best ever UK World Trial

Under clear blue skies and uninterrupted sunshine, which is forecast to continue right through to Saturday / Sunday, preparations are very much underway for this weekend's UK World Trial that will take place at Nevis Range just outside Fort William ? Scotland. Under the leadership of World famous course builder Martin Lampkin, a team of workers have been hard at it building three all new man-made hazards back in the start / finish area plus some fresh sections in the lower stream that borders the paddock.

Sections two, fourteen and fifteen will once again sit close to the main stage, with the final hazard incorporating a new double jump. This goes one better than last year's creation that brought the house down when Japanese rider and eventual day two winner Takahisa Fujinami ? Repsol Montesa made his huge leap of faith. The arena sections have been carefully crafted by Martin's son and boulder expert Harry Lampkin under the watchful eye of ex World championship minder Woody Hole and promise to deliver extreme action once again.

In the lower stream Martin has managed to squeeze in two extra sections as well as making some more new hazards in the typically Scottish setting. Up the top of the mountain there will be five watery zones all of which can be easily accessed by the gondola. All in all everything is shaping up for round six of the 2011 SPEA FIM Trial World Championship to be even better than last year's award winning event, which means its got to be a must for all motorcycle fans.

A guide to better physical conditioning for weekend racers

Anyone who has ever set foot in a racecar understands how physically demanding the cars can be during competition. We have all heard stories of Cup drivers losing up to 5 to 10 pounds a race because of the extreme conditions. One would have to be very nave to think that being in better physical condition would not benefit the local short track racer.

With the ultimate low-drag rearend built, we show you how to get it into your Dirt Late Model and get all of that horsepower to the ground reliably

Welcome to Part 2 of our look into maximizing your driveline efficiency in order to get more power from your engine to the rear wheels. Now that more and more racers are involved in classes that require crate motors, spec motors, or just horsepower-choking two-barrel carburetors, there has lately been a greatly increased emphasis from race teams on eliminating as much driveline resistance as possible. And we're definitely on board with that.

Lorenzo untouchable in qualy

World Champion Jorge Lorenzo made a sensational comeback from a high speed crash this morning to utterly dominate qualifying and take pole position for tomorrow?s Grand Prix of U.S.A, his first of the 2011 season.

The high side crash at the end of the morning?s practice left some wondering if the Yamaha Factory rider would make it through the whole qualifying session. Fears proved to be unfounded as the Mallorcan took to the track like a man possessed, breaking under the 1.22 mark on his first flying lap. A string of consistent laps saw him keep the top spot for the entire session barring a brief challenge by his team mate Ben Spies. Lorenzo reclaimed pole quickly and kept it to the end of the session, breaking the lap record in the process. Spies spent the early part of the session refining his set up, then having settled into a consistent pace put in a blistering lap to take provisional pole position from his team mate with a 1?21.578.

Lorenzo was quick to take first position back but Spies was still threatening to secure a front row start until a mistake on the brakes in turn three ended his qualifying session. As a result he will start from the second row of the grid tomorrow in fourth position, just 0.376 seconds from pole.

Jorge Lorenzo
?This pole position was unexpected for us after this morning, but thankfully I feel more pain walking than I do riding the bike. Of course I?m not in perfect condition on the bike and for sure I have to put more pressure on my arms and will get more tired. I think I was very lucky this morning that I had no big injuries. I think this pole position is for us an impressive result.?

Ben Spies
?It wasn?t a bad qualifying session, we tried a couple of things and the race set up is not so bad. We got in qualifying mode and got some pretty good laps in. I made a mistake and locked the front up on the brakes going in to turn three trying super hard to get on the front row. The Yamaha boss said to me last night that he wanted me on the front row so I was doing everything I could. Joking aside I was trying everything and just made a small mistake. I banged my hand up quite a bit but it will be fine and ready for the race tomorrow. I think we?ll find a couple of things with the bike in the morning and hopefully it?ll be a good day.?

Last Race At Hialeah Speedway - Hell, I Was There!
Last Race At Hialeah Speedway - Stock Car Racing Magazine
The last night of racing at Hialeah Speedway was an action packed event ending the 50 year run of the southernmost speedway in the United States

In some areas of the country, local short tracks are an endangered species. With urban development and sprawl spreading across once-rural areas, the large pieces of land racetracks are built on are becoming million-dollar prizes to be had by developers. After years of fighting for survival, Hialeah Speedway has become the latest victim. August 13, 2005, marked the last time race cars would run on the historic oval.

The track, located on US 27 just east of Palmetto Expressway in Hialeah, was built in 1953-'54 by the Greater Miami Racing Association (GMRA), hosting its first event in July 1954. Local driver Herb Tillman took First-Place honors driving George Nelson's '34 Ford modified coupe, kicking off a 51-year legacy for the southernmost short track in the United States. As the old pre-war race cars gave way to '50s era race cars, Hialeah soldiered on as a hotbed of South Florida racing.

Blue Chip Brings British Superbike Stars to Poole Quay

(1888PressRelease) July 22, 2011 - Motorcycle racing fans are in for a treat at Poole Quay Bike Night when MCE Insurance British Superbike (BSB) Championship contenders, John 'Hopper' Hopkins and Jon "JK" Kirkham of Samsung Crescent Racing fame, will be on hand to sign autographs and meet the fans, while the Samsung Crescent racing machines will be on display for bike fans to get a close look at state-of-the-art racing engineering.

Poole-based technology sponsor of the Samsung Crescent Racing British Superbike team, Blue Chip, is hosting this very popular event on Tuesday 6th September, bringing racing superstars to the Quay for the fourth consecutive year. There will also be an opportunity to win tickets to a forthcoming race.

Blue Chip Managing Director, Richard Cook, said: "Both riders bring their experiences in MotoGP, AMA Superbike, World Superbike and Superstock to the BSB circuits. Hopkins has shown fine form, achieving a historical double early in the season at Oulton Park by becoming the first American to stand on a BSB podium (second place in the first race), and then to win a BSB Championship race (first position in the second race*).

"Kirkham joined the Samsung Crescent racing team after winning the 2010 Metzeler National Superstock1000 Championship last year on a self-funded bike. It is great to be able to offer the fans - and riders - the opportunity to mingle at the regionally acclaimed Poole Quay bike night."

Up to 2,000 motorbike riders from across the south attend the free-of-charge bike nights organised by Poole Tourism at Poole Quay every Tuesday from the first Tuesday in April until the end of September, appreciated by motorcyclists and spectators for their organisation and relaxed atmosphere. The Samsung Crescent Suzuki event hosted by Blue Chip promises to be a highlight yet again in 2011.
