On 19th February, the winter silence will be rudely interrupted when twelve freestyle motocross riders rev up their bikes in Turin and stage an incredible display of stunts as part of the latest NIGHT of the JUMPs tour. After a five-year break, the world?s greatest FMX series returns to Italy. And the Palasport Olimpico arena in Turin provides the perfect setting for the curtain-raiser to the 2011 FIM Freestyle MX World Championship.
Now into its eleventh year, NIGHT of the JUMPs has lined up the most daring and skilful riders of all time. With the current world champion Podmol Libor (CZE), runner-up Brice Izzo (FRA) and Jose Miralles (ESP), last year?s Top Three are back in action. But none of them will be able to rest on their laurels, because the new kids on the block will be aiming to match them for the ingenuity and delivery of their backflip combinations. The challengers led David Rinaldo (FRA) and Maikel Melero (ESP) have been working hard over the winter and intend to dazzle the three NIGHT of the JUMPs alpha males with a veritable fireworks display.
Flying the flag for Italy will be Massimo Bianconcini and Vanni Odera, who will be pulling out all the stops in front of their home crowd to reach the final. And hoping to rain on their parade will be experienced FMX riders Fabian Bauersachs (GER) and Javier Villegas (CHI). Also back in contention after injury is Czech Red Bull FMX prodigy Petr Pilat with his repertoire of crazy flip combinations. But before they can mix it with the big three, they also have to get past Bizouard Remi. The twice world champion from France has fully recovered from last year?s injury and has his sights set on new honours.
The sideshows too are guaranteed to produce maximum excitement. In the Highest Air Contest, the riders will be trying to break the world record of 11.00 metres set by Alastair Sayer in 2010. For the first time, the Italian crowd will also have the pleasure of watching the Race & Style Contest which pits two riders against each other for speed and quality of tricks, a new event that has proved highly popular.
2001 saw the birth of the Night of the Jumps. Within 11 years, the series has developed into a ?sportainment? tour that has established itself as the ultimate benchmark for freestyle motocross skills and thrills. It is only at the NIGHT of the JUMPs that world and European champions are crowned. This is where the knights of freestyle motocross earn their spurs and become superstars who are feted around the globe and write their name in the record books. The 2011 season is guaranteed to bring forth new heroes in the annals of NIGHT of the JUMPs. And it is the spectators at the Palasport Olimpico who are set to discover at first hand the identity of these future legends.
